Starting Salary : $13,101 - $14,316 DOQ; Growth to $25,103

DEPARTMENT RESPONSIBILITY

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Preparation and presentation of:
  • Regularly scheduled and specialized story times for children ages 0 through 5th grade
  • School visits involving book talking, story times, and resource instruction for preschools, elementary and middle school students and staff
  • Plans and presents programs for parents and children together that foster emergent literacy
  • May provide programs for adults related to children's literature or services
  • Special tours by request as assigned
  • Special programs or events in the community as assigned
  • Requires a lot of vigorous activity including standing, jumping, stretching, singing and sitting on the floor.
  • Participates in LATI (Library Associate Training Institute).
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures of Howard County Library.
  • Actively supports the values of Howard County Library.

OTHER DUTIES

  • May act as back-up at other public service desks within the library system
  • May assist with closing and building security on an assigned basis
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

CONTROLS OVER WORK
Works under the supervision of the Children's Services Supervisor.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED*

  • Four year college degree
  • Demonstrated interest in working with the public.
  • Knowledge of Library's collection in all formats currently available.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and lead groups, committees and other planning structures.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and solve problems, to develop new processes and procedures in response to changing customer expectations and system-wide goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with diverse groups such as government leaders, the library community, and with staff and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in English effectively and clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of the community and current events.
  • Knowledge of library policies and procedures.
  • Computer literacy - ability to use programs/processes such as the Internet, electronic databases, Windows. Linux, OpenOffice and other word processing applications, as well as other library related programs.
  • Current valid driver's license.
  • Maryland Public Libraries Certificate (eligible for).

PHYSICAL STANDARDS
Job allows for variance in work routine and considerable amounts of standing, walking, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling and sitting. In addition, strenuous activity is required, such as carrying bags or boxes of books (weighing up to 30 lbs.) or arranging rooms for programs. Some driving required.

*The Library Director may substitute demonstrated work-related experience or skills for the specific degree requirement of any position.


20 hour work week,
Monday - Saturday including two nights per week,
Alternating Fridays and Saturdays,
Maximum three Sundays out of four
