a la Cart: The Secret Lives of Grocery Shoppers by Hillary Carlip

Normally I wouldn’t suggest not reading something, but in the case of a la Cart, I insist. Don’t read the introduction!

If you don’t like spoilers, if you like to find out "at the end", if you like to remain blissfully unaware until it is all over – don’t read the introduction to a la Cart! The best way to experience this book is to just dive in without introductions (no matter how rude that may seem). Start with the first entry about Graciela (page 10), or try the one about Helen (page 50), or even Lloyd (page 82). Once you’ve read them all, read the final entry, and then go back to read the introduction. You won’t regret reading the book out of order.

Have you ever found a piece of paper with writing on it? Have you wondered about the person who wrote on that paper and what their life might be like? If so, then a la Cart is for you. Each entry of this book is based on a real shopping list found by the author, Hillary Carlip. She chronicles the life of every person behind the shopping lists, complete with photos.

I can’t imagine enjoying this quirky, humorous, different book if I had read it in chronological order. Once you understand why you shouldn’t read the introduction, you can truly appreciate Carlip’s imagination and creativity. I thank my co-worker who recommended this book to me without giving away any hints of the treasures it holds.
