Stan M. Haynes, author of The First American Political Conventions: Transforming Presidential Nominations, 1832-1872, discusses Lincoln's unexpected nomination at the 1860 Republican convention in Chicago, and his renomination in Baltimore in 1864. The tactics used by Lincoln's team were shrewd and effective, but some were of questionable propriety.
