Choose Civility Symposium
OMG to AARP: Bridging the Multi-Generational Divide

Explore how our relationships and ideas of civil behavior are changing in the digital age of social media and rapid technological innovation. Is our culture increasingly oblivious to common courtesy, distanced from civility by technology, or are we finding new ways to form and maintain relationships through social media?

New findings from a November 2012 Pew Research Center survey show that 78 percent of teens now have a cell phone, and 47 percent of them own smartphones. According to Mary Madden, Senior Researcher for the Pew Research Center's Internet Project:

The nature of teens' internet use has transformed dramatically - from stationary connections tied to shared desktops in the home to always-on connections that move with them throughout the day. In many ways, teens represent the leading edge of mobile connectivity, and the patterns of their technology use often signal future changes in the adult population.

Is new media on a collision course with civility? How do current trends in technology use portend the future?

Featuring NPR's Korva Coleman in conversation with:

  • David Burstein, Founder & Executive Director of Generation18 and author of Fast Future: How the Millennial Generation is Shaping Our World
  • Jennifer Howard, senior reporter at The Chronicle of Higher Education
  • Brad Sachs, psychologist and bestselling author of The Good Enough Child and The Good Enough Teen
  • Karen Stohr, associate professor of Philosophy at Georgetown University and author of On Manners
