Battle of the Books
presented by Howard County Library and the Howard County Public School System ![]() Battle of the Books is a book trivia contest for fifth grade students. The purpose of the competition is to get students excited about reading while challenging them to pay attention to book details. Battle of the Books is a lively event that not only increases reading, but also teaches teamwork and good sportsmanship. Date: Friday, April 23, 2010 Time: 7:00 pm Where: Atholton High School Teams of five students and one adult coach will each read a total of 15 pre-determined books. The books have been chosen by Howard County Library information specialists and Howard County Public School System and media specialists to include a wide range of reading levels. Multiple copies of each book on the reading list are on reserve at the Library for team members. During the competition, a moderator will ask a question about a book. Four different types of questions can be asked: a direct quote from one of the book characters; a statement about something that happens in the book; a passage taken directly from the book; details about an illustration or picture. Each member of the first place team will receive a gift card from a local bookstore as well as a copy of the team READ poster. Prizes also will be awarded to the second and third place teams, as well as for other categories such as best team name, best team spirit wear, etc. Everyone who participates will receive a small prize and Certificate of Participation.
