Getting a Library Card

Apply online

If you live, work or attend school in Maryland, you may apply for an MPOWER Card. This card gives Maryland residents access to all public library resources through a single card.

The MPOWER Card gives you access to everything you want at a time and place that’s most convenient for you. No matter where you live, work or play in Maryland, you can now access the resources of all 174 public libraries through the use of the MPOWER Card. Sign up for an MPOWER Card at any branch or online and use it to check out materials from any public library in Maryland.

The MPOWER Cards serve as a visual reminder that you may use all public libraries across the state. The MPOWER Card features Maryland images and local library information on a special card that reveals both images depending on the angle at which it is held.

When you register in person, your library card will be available in about five minutes. When you register online, you may pick up your card in two days at the branch of your choice.

We will ask to see photo identification with your current name and address when you apply for a card or pick it up.

If you do not have photo identification when you apply for a card in person, we will mail the card to you. You may borrow only three items until you receive your card.

While there is no age requirement, a parent or legal guardian's signature is required for applicants under 13. A signature indicates parents or legal guardians agree to pay all charges for overdue, lost, or damaged materials borrowed on their children's library cards.

If you are under 13, be sure you have your parent's permission to apply for a library card. You may also need their help to fill out the registration form. We will ask for your name, address, phone number, date of birth, and if you've had a card but lost it.

There is no charge to replace a lost or stolen card.
