Central Library at the Lakefront Update
On December 1, the County Council formally approved legislation needed to advance both the new Downtown Library at the Lakefront and Downtown affordable housing projects. In a 4 to 1 vote, the Council gave approval to purchase the lakefront property identified for the future library and the conveyance of land to support the housing development both in the Merriweather District and at the existing Central Branch site following the opening of the new library.
Maryland State Senator Guy Guzzone, Chair of the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee, remarked,
“Today’s announcement marks an exciting step forward for Downtown Columbia, Howard County, and the State of Maryland. With $10 million in dedicated State funding to bring a new Central Branch to life, we’re ensuring that Howard County continues to lead the way in opportunity, inclusion, and innovation. Through the new Central Branch at the Lakefront and much-needed affordable housing in Downtown Columbia, we are creating communities where everyone succeeds.”
We extend deep thanks to the County Executive, County Council members, and community partners for their leadership and support.
Next steps:
With County Government, a feasibility study will move forward to validate the site’s opportunities and constraints The County will issue an RFP for a design-build team to refine cost estimates and update the building program in alignment with the original Heatherwick concept
