September is National Library Card Sign-up Month! If you already have a Howard County System library card, this month serves as a reminder that a library card provides endless opportunities to learn, grow, and connect. If you don’t have one yet, read on to see why you need to visit a branch and get yours today!

Our adult, teen, and children’s collections are continually expanding — not just with newly published books, just-released DVDs, and the latest music CDs, but also with special collections that guide you in developing skills, working on projects, or just having fun trying something new. Under “Books & More” on our website, browse the “Library of Things” for technology, art, kits, video games, and tools, most of which are available to request with your library card. The DIY Collection at our Elkridge Branch even has its own special card, so visit Elkridge and sign up today to borrow everything from bicycle repair tools to cake pans to air compressor kits.

Heading back to school? A library card opens so many doors for collaboration, study, research, homework help, and exam, college, and career preparation. The “Homework & Test Prep” link under “Digital Library” on our website lists resources and databases that can help you start the school year successfully. BrainFuse offers language and writing labs with expert assistance — now available 24/7; a SkillSurfer with videos and practice exams for the AP, ACT, PSAT, and SAT tests; and even live online tutoring and the ability to schedule online meetup sessions to study with friends in a private virtual study room.
