Ever clicked “I Agree” on a contract or software update, took a deep breath, and just hoped for the best?
If so, you are in great company! Whether you’re growing a creative agency, launching a hometown startup, or turning a weekend side hustle into a full-time gig, contracts are part of the journey. They crop up when you hire your first team member, welcome a new client, work with vendors, or try out new online tools. But let’s be honest: reading legal fine print often feels like trying to decipher a foreign language.
That’s why we’re rolling out the welcome mat at the library this month to help you demystify the legalese and feel truly confident in your business setup. Join us for a friendly, plain-spoken 40-minute presentation followed by a live, hands-on Q&A with a local attorney. Together, we’ll walk through the essential, everyday agreements every small business ought to have in its toolbox. We’ll break down which clauses deserve a closer look, share common slip-ups to avoid, and show you how ordinary fine print can affect your rights and creative work down the road.

We’ll also spend some time chatting about a hot topic on everyone’s mind: artificial intelligence. Kathryn believes AI and its legal implications matter to local businesses because it is changing both how they create content and how their content is monitored, and how they track and protect client data. As one example of a real situation they’ve handled, automated tools can scan websites and social media for possible copyright infringement, so a small business may receive a claim over a photo, song, graphic, or video clip it thought it was free to use—or previously thought it was free to use. A flag is not proof of infringement, but responding can take time and money.

Discuss how contracts with designers, marketers, and other vendors can spell out who must obtain licenses, keep proof of permission, and address infringement claims. We’ll also cover simple habits business owners can use themselves, such as saving license terms and reviewing AI generated material before publishing it. Those protections matter just as much to a neighborhood business as to a large corporation. Gain practical, sensible tips for creating smart AI policies for your own team. Whether you run a nonprofit, do freelance work, or manage a local shop, this is a cozy, zero-pressure space to get real answers from a friendly legal pro. Kathryn and Jason Martin, U.S. Air Force veterans, are dedicated to helping local businesses build a strong foundation.
