October: National Book Month

It has been National Book Month throughout October!

Did you visit the library this month? It has been National Book Month throughout October, and the library is certainly a good place to celebrate! Started in 2003 by the National Book Foundation, its mission is, “to celebrate the best literature published in the United States, connect books with readers of all ages, and champion the literary arts as a vital part of our culture.” Acknowledging a variety of books and authors is a way to diversify our reading, recognize the importance of literature in our daily lives, and champion literacy and the literary arts in our communities.

HCLS is about both books and belonging, so we appreciate the breadth and depth of our library collections, as well as the opportunities that community members have to meet others and discuss the books they read and enjoy. At last count, HCLS leads 26 book clubs across our six branches, including several that are online or hybrid, several that meet in other community spaces, and even the UnBook Reading Group, where participants connect with a community of readers without the stress of assigned reading! Bring the book of your choice and read silently in a comfy spot at Backwater Books in Ellicott City — a worthwhile partnership between the library and an independent bookstore. Visit any branch or check out the “Book Clubs” link under Classes & Events on our website to learn more.

The Friends & Foundation of HCLS understands the critical importance of community support and fundraising to drive many of our key initiatives throughout the year. From Battle of the Books to Project Literacy and beyond, the Friends invest in, inspire, and empower our library’s mission as a place for you to learn, grow, and connect. If you know a Friend, thank them for their volunteer service, and if you’re interested in joining the Friends, please look for opportunities on their website: friendshcls.org.

Julie is an instructor and research specialist at HCLS Miller Branch who finds her work as co-editor of Chapter Chats very rewarding. She loves gardening, birds, books, all kinds of music, and the great outdoors.
